    Hi Paul

Wonder if you can help. First off yes I am the undisputed queen of the ‘technically challenged’ and a newbie to boot.

With the aid of a how to video, I uploaded into my FTP blog plug in folder the XML Site Map Plug in but it has not appeared anywhere in my dashboard under plugins. SAME with the TinyMC advanced plug in.

    Any advice?

    Many Thanks

    Hi Vivien,

Important to make sure it is in the right location and that the directory structure is correct. I also assume you are using at least Wordpress 2.5.1.

The best way to upload plugins is by uploading the plugin .zip file that you downloaded directly into the /wp-content/plugins/ folder then extract it from within your FTP program(some FTP programs cannot extract archived files so you may need to unzip the file on your pc first then upload the unzipped folder) or ideally your CPanel File Manager - you did extract it didn’t you? If it is still a .zip file then it will not work. Once extracted, it should auto create a folder with the plugin’s name (though some plugins are only a single .php file which will just sit in the root of the /plugins/ folder rather than in a subfolder of it’s own). This folder will contain the .php files needed to run the plugin. Wordpress picks up on the .php file that contains this information (i took this example from the Sitemap plugin):

    Plugin Name: Google XML Sitemaps
    Plugin URI: http://www.arnebrachhold.de/redir/sitemap-home/
Description: This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO. Configuration Page
    Version: 3.1.0.1
    Author: Arne Brachhold
    Author URI: http://www.arnebrachhold.de/

This info tells Wordpress that it is a plugin and this info is what you see on the plugins page in wp-admin. The file containing this code was called sitemap.php and should be extracted so that the folder structure is like this

    /wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

The sitemap.php folder sites inside that folder (amongst other files) and is what Wordpress needs to read. I tested this and it appears fine in my wp-admin plugins section.

Sometimes a plugin might unzip with a second subfolder, in which case it may not work properly. Make sure it is only one subfolder deep. e.g. a plugin may unzip to /pluginx/pluginx/pluginx.php in which case you need to just copy up the second pluginx folder e.g. /pluginx/pluginx.php

Hope this makes sense. If it still doesn’t work then let me know :)

    Hey Paul

Me again, wonder if you could answer a question for me. I have the following WordPress Theme:

Get Some! 1.2 by John Crenshaw, it is an Adsense Ready theme.

How and where do I insert my Adsense pbID ?

    Many thanks
    Vivien

    Vivien,

had a look at the theme, but it’s not ‘Adsense Ready’ as such….every blog
can have adsense, but some already have the code in place for Adsense and
you just need to change the PubID (like Prosense theme by DoshDosh) -
unfortunately this one doesn’t seem to have it. Can you confirm that i
have the correct theme you are talking about? Is it this one?

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/get-some

In any case, its not a big deal. Its very easy to insert the Adsense code
regardless. Let me know if that’s the correct theme you mean and then ill
give you instructions on how to get Adsense into the blog…great question
actually that i really should have on the WordpressNinja blog…!

    cheers,

    Paul.
